Exploring the Great Outdoors: 5 Tips Enhancing Safety and Adventure!

Updated: Jan 30

One of the things that has kept my sanity intact over the past couple of months has been walking to the park as a family. My boy loves the playground, pushing his monster trucks down the slide and my twinsies love the fresh air and watching everything that is going on around them.

As a Mother and a Psych graduate, I understand the importance of outdoor play and the important role it has in our children's physical and cognitive development.

From fostering creativity to promoting physical activity, the outdoors offers a wealth of opportunities for learning and growth.

The Benefits of Outdoor Play

Outdoor play is essential for children's physical, emotional, and cognitive development.

Research shows that spending time outdoors can improve children's motor skills, enhance their problem-solving abilities, and boost their overall mood and well-being.

From climbing trees to building sandcastles, outdoor play encourages children to engage their senses, explore their surroundings, and develop important life skills. However, ensuring our children's safety during outdoor adventures is paramount.

Enhancing Safety with My Bright Tyke

At My Bright Tyke, we understand the importance of keeping children safe during outdoor play.

That's why we offer a range of vibrant and high-visibility clothing for kids designed to make your little ones stand out in any environment.

Our bright colours and eye-catching designs ensure that your children are easily visible to you and others, reducing the risk of accidents and providing peace of mind as they explore. Helping them stay visible makes them easier to see so you will more likely catch them strolling off somewhere they shouldn't or spot them easier in the crowd.

With a swift glance upwards, my son stands out effortlessly amidst the sea of neutrals. His presence remains easily distinguishable within my peripheral vision granting me a sense of calm and peace of mind!

5 Safety Tips For Outdoor Play

While the clothing definitely enhances the visibility of our kids, I find it important to also take additional child safety precautions during outdoor play. Ensuring safety in outdoor playgrounds is a high priority for us. Here are some safety tips that I use to ensure a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience for my littles:

1.     Choose age-appropriate activities:

When organizing outdoor activities for my children, I consider their ages, skills, and interests (and when I say organise, I mean just walking them to the park, nothing elaborate).

I aim to provide activities that not only stimulate them mentally and physically but also ensure their safety and enjoyment. While my 14-month-old twins may enjoy exploring the playground stairs, I am cautious about allowing them to attempt activities like descending the fireman pole or navigating the rock climbing wall, as they have not yet acquired the necessary foundational skills for these tasks.

As for my older boy, I try to encourage him to explore the spider web climbing frame, as he is more experienced and can traverse this obstacle safely.

2.     Supervise closely

We prioritize our children's safety during outdoor play, particularly in unfamiliar settings, by ensuring that either my husband or I always keep a watchful eye on them.

With three kids, coordinating can be quite a juggling act during outdoor activities. Therefore, we maintain constant communication to support each other when one of us is occupied and unable to supervise another child.

We remain vigilant to ensure their safety and minimize any potential risks. Additionally, we find it advantageous when they are dressed in bright block colours such as our My Bright Tyke matching sets from head to toe, as it makes it easier to keep them in sight at all times.

When we are in very crowded places such as carnivals or environments where our children can get easily lost, we place a small tracking device in our children's My Bright Tyke shirts.

My Bright Tyke shirts have a hidden and easily accessible pocket which is conveniently sown onto the inside of the shirts. This pocket can securely hold any small tracking device such as an Apple Airtag, Tile or GPS device. It gives us parents another bit of confidence on top of the highly visible colours our kids are wearing to quickly find our children if they get lost.

3.     Teach child safety rules

Taking the time to teach your kids basic child safety during outdoor play rules is very important.

Things like staying in sight, avoiding strangers, and wearing the right gear can make all the difference.

But let's be real, even though I try my best to remind my son of these rules regularly, it's like they fly out the window when he's having a blast with his friends. Can anyone relate? Yet, I keep drilling them in his head and one day I have the hope that it will stick!

4.     Dress for the weather

I also try to make sure my kids are dressed appropriately for the weather conditions, whether it's sunny, rainy, or cold.

My Bright Tyke has shorts, T-shirts, and Jumpers that fit well to most outdoor age-appropriate activities!

I also like to keep a spare raincoat or spare shorts in the car! We live in Melbourne and you can never really know or rely on the weather.

5.     Stay hydrated and nourished

I never leave the house without a drink bottle for myself and my kids! (It's hard to miss my 1L Frank Green bottle).

I make sure I also bring some snacks to keep my kids energized during outdoor play. I like to encourage regular breaks and rest periods to prevent fatigue and ensure a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Outdoor play is pivotal in children's overall development, benefiting them physically, emotionally, and cognitively.

Conclusion:

Outdoor play benefits are vast, contributing significantly to children’s physical, cognitive and emotional development.

It provides opportunities for children's physical exercise, fresh air, and sensory exploration, which are essential for their health and well-being. Additionally, outdoor play fosters creativity, imagination, and problem-solving skills, as children engage with their surroundings and interact with nature.

By encouraging the importance of outdoor play, we, parents and caregivers support children in developing important life skills and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world. So, let's prioritize outdoor playtime, allowing children to explore, learn, and thrive in the great outdoors.
